Someone who has a dog in both fights in the Lakers vs. Warriors Round 2 playoffs series is Klay Thompson’s dad, Mychal Thompson.
The last time these two storied franchises met in the playoffs, Mychal was playing for the purple and gold.
It was 1991 and the Lakers won 4-1 in the Western Conference semifinals, while Thompson was watching on as a one-year-old.
These days, Mychal is the Lakers color analyst for KSPN-710, so will be watching on Tuesday as a Lakers employee of sorts while his son plays for the opposing team. Who does he want to win?
“Just a great basketball game,” Thompson told The Sporting Tribune’s Mark Medina. “Either way, I can’t lose. If my son wins, I’m thrilled. If the Lakers win, I’m happy.”
After the Warriors defeated the Kings in Game 6, Klay told media it was a “dream come true” for him to play against the Lakers – a moment he’s been waiting 12 years for.
Mychal is preparing himself for an exciting series but when asked who will win, he can only predict that it will be the best defensive team.
“It’s going to be a long series,” Mychal said. “It’s going to come down to who plays the best defense. I have no idea who is going to win the series. Both teams are playing great. They showed their toughness in each series. This is a toss-up series.
“It’s going to be an exciting series either way, whether the Lakers or the Warriors win. I think whoever wins this series is probably going to win the title. You have to respect Denver and Phoenix on the other side. But I think this series is going to be so good. It’s going to prepare the winner so much that they will be more battle tested coming into the West Finals.”
Game 1 of the second round playoffs series between the Lakers and the Warriors will take place on Tuesday, May 2 at 7:00PM PDT.
