There was no surprise when 14th ranked Hyeres-Toulon (3-16) lost at home to fifth ranked Caen (13-6) 68-60 on Friday. It was an exceptional evening for Kenyan-American forward Joel Awich (201-1993, college: Cal Poly) who led the winners and scored 17 points and 9 rebounds. Power forward Mounir Bernaoui (203-1997) accounted for 11 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists for the winning side. Lithuanian point guard Mantvydas Staniulis (186-1997) came up with 17 points and forward Doume Pierrick Moukenga (203-1987) added 10 points and 7 rebounds respectively for Hyeres-Toulon in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Hyeres-Toulon’s coach Pierre Tavano let to play ten players, but that didn’t help to avoid defeat in this game. The victory was the third consecutive win for Caen. They moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams. Hyeres-Toulon lost their third game in a row. Newly promoted team keeps the fourteenth position with 16 games lost. They share it with Pole France. Caen will meet at home SOPCC (#6) in the next round. No shocking result in a game when eighth ranked Besancon (10-9) beat on the road 13th ranked Kaysersberg (4-15) 88-78 on Friday. Besancon dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Kaysersberg’s 28. They outrebounded Kaysersberg 45-27 including 30 on the defensive glass. It was an exceptional evening for American Mykal Riley (198-1985, college: Alabama) who led the winners and scored 24 points and 6 rebounds. Mali point guard Siriman Kanoute (181-2001) accounted for 15 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) for the winning side. Point guard Gregory Bengaber (186-1997) came up with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists and Boukhary Cissoko (198-2000) added 17 points respectively for Kaysersberg in the defeat. Five Besancon and four Kaysersberg players scored in double figures. Besancon moved-up to sixth place, which they share with 4 other teams. Loser Kaysersberg keeps the thirteenth position with 15 games lost. Besancon will meet at home league’s leader SPO Rouen in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Kaysersberg will play against SO Maritime Boulogne (#12) in Boulogne-sur-Mer and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
