France escaped with a narrow overtime 94-90 win over Japan at the 2024 Olympic Games. The home side started better with a 32-25 run, however needed to catch up in the fourth quarter to survive the game. France trailed 4 points with 10 seconds left when Matthew Strazel (184-PG-2002) made a three and added a free throw to help get France into overtime. Victor Wembanyama (224-C/F-2004) scored 8 straight points to give France a 92-84 lead that Japan couldn’t overcome.
Victor Wembanyama stepped up with 18 points and Matthew Strazel netted 17. Yuki Kawamura (172-G-2001) scored 29 points while Rui Hachimura (203-F-1998, college: Gonzaga) added 24 for Japan.
