It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Real Betis. The former international forward Daniel Diez (203-1993) orchestrated the victory by scoring 18 points and 6 rebounds. Armenian-American center Luke Fischer (211-1994, college: Marquette) contributed with 16 points and 7 rebounds (perfect from the field making all seven shots !!!) for the winners. American power forward Brooks De Bisschop (206-1998, college: NAU) answered with 14 points and 5 rebounds for Real Betis. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Burgos SP maintains first place with 21-2 record. The game in Ourense was also worth to mention about. Second ranked Estudiantes (20-3) played at the court of 8th ranked Ourense (11-12). Estudiantes managed to secure a 6-point victory 79-73. It was a great evening for Italian-Uruguayan guard Jayson Granger (191-1989) who led his team to a victory scoring 11 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Joaquin Rodriguez helped adding 17 points. Portuguese guard Diogo Brito (198-1997, college: Utah St.) responded with 18 points. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Estudiantes have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain second place with 20-3 record behind leader Burgos SP, which they share with Fuenlabrada. Ourense at the other side dropped to the ninth position with 12 games lost. Estudiantes will play against Castello (#16) in Castellon in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Ourense will play on the road against Moron (#18) in Moron de la Frontera and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Worth to mention about the upset in a game between Zunder Palencia (16-7) and Valladolid (7-16), which took place in Valladolid. Higher ranked Zunder Palencia lost to sixteenth ranked Valladolid in a road game 83-92 on Saturday. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Zunder Palencia. It was an exceptional evening for Shemar Wilson who led the winners and scored 13 points and 7 rebounds. Valladolid’s coach Inaki Martin used entire bench saving starting five for next games. Juan Pablo Vaulet came up with 18 points and 7 rebounds for Palencia in the defeat. Valladolid moved-up to fourteenth place, which they share with Castello and Gipuzkoa. Loser Zunder Palencia keeps the fifth position with seven games lost. Valladolid will meet Gipuzkoa (#14) in the next round. Palencia will play against Cartagena (#8) and hope to secure a win and be promoted back to the Liga Endesa just one year after relegation.
There were no big surprises in other games of round 23: Fuenlabrada beat Menorca on the road 83-72. Burgos T. destroyed Moron on its own court 97-73. Gipuzkoa unfortunately lost to Cartagena in a road game 73-81. Oviedo recorded a loss to Obradoiro at home 68-74. Alicante was defeated by Cantabria on the opponent’s court 83-72. Zamora beat Castello in a home game 96-87.
The most impressive performance of 23th round was 23 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals by Jalen Tate of Castello.
Menorca – Fuenlabrada 72-83
No shocking result in a game when third ranked Fuenlabrada (20-3) beat 11th ranked Menorca (9-14) in Mahon 83-72 on Saturday. It was an exceptional evening for Bahamas-American forward Travis Munnings (196-1994, college: ULM) who led the winners and scored 15 points and 6 rebounds. American forward Tanner McGrew (203-1993, college: WVWC) accounted for 9 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side. American point guard Jalen Cone (180, college: California) came up with 27 points and point guard Pol Figueras (187-1998) added 12 points and 5 assists respectively for Menorca in the defeat. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Fuenlabrada. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Estudiantes. Loser Menorca keeps the eleventh position with 14 games lost.
