Victor Wembanyama Gets Honest About His Nicknames

Rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama has been called many things in his short NBA career, but he doesn’t care for many of the nicknames floating around.

Except for the one the great LeBron James gave him.

Before his highly-anticipated matchup with Spurs against the Knicks at MSG on Wednesday night, Wemby was asked for his thoughts on all the nicknames that he’s been given, particularly the ‘unicorn’ label that the media has latched onto.

“I mean, that nickname has been used over and over, so I’m not really a big fan of it,” Wemby said in response to being called a unicorn. “Just like LeBron said: ‘Everybody has been a unicorn.’ There’s just one alien, right?”

Before the Frenchman was even drafted yet, LeBron was hyping the rook big time, which is what Wembanyama was referring to.

“Everybody’s been a unicorn over the last few years. But he’s more like an alien,” LeBron said In October of last year. “No one has ever seen anyone as tall as he is, but as fluid and as graceful as he is on the floor… His ability to put the ball on the floor, shoot step-back jumpers out of the post, step-back threes, catch-and-shoot threes, block shots. He’s for sure a generational talent and, hopefully, he continues to stay healthy.”

So far, the 19-year-old has been quite impressive on the court.

He has averaged 19.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 2.6 blocks on 46.2 percent shooting from the field across seven games.

Wemby and LeBron are yet to matchup on the court, but no doubt it will be an unmissable game.
