Federal Judge Colleen Lawless granted Terrence Shannon Jr.’s request for a temporary restraining order on Friday. This ruling allows the fifth-year Illinois guard to rejoin the team and resume playing, despite his December arrest and subsequent team suspension following a felony rape charge.
According to the Associated Press, Judge Lawless determined that the university had violated Shannon’s civil rights. In response to the court’s decision, University of Illinois associate chancellor Robin Kaler issued a statement confirming Shannon’s reinstatement as a full-status University student-athlete, making him eligible for basketball practice and competition.
The university also stated that it will continue to review the court order and closely monitor the case. However, it retains the right to appeal, as reported by the AP.
