Nick Nurse on Tyrese Maxey's 22-5-10 performance today: It's not enough, too passive

Kyle Neubeck: Nick Nurse asked about Tyrese Maxey’s bounce back and 22-5-10 line in the second half after a slow start. “It’s not enough” Says he’s too good to play passively, and that they made it a point to manufacture aggression for him pic.twitter.com/EkWPRzJZAT

Things looked a little dicy with Joel Embiid on the bench and Kevin Durant checking in to begin the fourth quarter.
Tyrese Maxey, Tobias Harris, and a guy who goes by Tsunami Papi made sure Embiid wouldn’t take the floor again.

4 straight Ws for the Sixers.
Says a lot that I thought Maxey was off for a lot of the night and he ends with 22-5-10 and led the closing kick to keep Embiid on the bench in the 4th. Excellent stuff.

Between installing a new offensive system featuring tons of movement and navigating the James Harden drama, Nick Nurse is easily the early favorite for NBA Coach of the Year. – 3:20 PM

Not only did the Sixers stretch the lead with Kevin Durant on the court and Joel Embiid on the bench, but Nick Nurse never had to come back to Embiid at all. Been a very impressive fourth quarter from Philly, which is going to win going away. – 3:19 PM

Maxey finds Reed in the short roll, finger rolls a layup to put the Sixers up 15 and force a Suns timeout. They’ve silenced Durant in the fourth quarter thus far. Reed staying in, Embiid might not have to come back in. – 3:12 PM
Gina Mizell @ginamizell
Maxey has struggled with his shot today, but has two big buckets in the fourth quarter. Finished at the rim and just hit a three to put the Sixers up 99-86 with less than seven to play. – 3:10 PM

Sixers make up for the ugly possession with a crisper one. Joel draws double kicks to Maxey to find Melton open, no good, long offensive board (!) to Joel for pull up – 2:39 PM

Embiid stranded Maxey open on the wing, then Kelly stranded Tobias in the corner. Harris clearly wanted the swing swing let oubre know – 2:37 PM

A down half from Embiid (3-9 fg, 4 TOs) and Maxey (4-12 fg, 0-3 from 3), but the Sixers’ dependable, reliable, impact forward tandem of Kelly Oubre Jr (17 on 7-10) and Tobias Harris (12 on 4-6) are keeping them afloat.
52-45 Sixers lead at the half. – 2:13 PM

Another awesome Kelly Oubre half in a season that is quickly becoming filled with those. Leading all scorers with 17 and helping to make up for tough starts for Embiid and Maxey – 2:11 PM

Halftime: Sixers 52, Suns 45. Oubre with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Harris with 12 and 7. Embiid with 11 points on 3-of-9 FG. Maxey is 4-of-12 from the floor but has five assists. Suns are shooting just 33.3 percent from the floor. – 2:11 PM

Maxey is overpassing today which is compounding the bad shooting start, would rather live with a bad volume shooting game from him than have him play timid – 2:07 PM

Birthday boy Tyrese Maxey missed his first three shots — including a wide open (almost too-open) three-pointer — but maybe that transition layup will get him going. Sixers are 5-of-11 from the floor to start this one. – 1:23 PM

More on this storyline

Keith Pompey on Joel Embiid’s future: There comes a point in time where if you’re serious about winning a championship, as a competitor in you, you can’t fault a person for wanting to leave after a while. At this particular time, I’ll say that Joel is monitoring the situation and how everything goes. Right now, they’re optimistic because Maxey is playing well, and they have a bunch of role players who can help them out. If Morey doesn’t do anything with this and they suffer another second-round loss, I could see Embiid asking for a trade heading into next year. -via HoopsHype / November 2, 2023
Michael Scotto: The 76ers are preparing for Tyrese Maxey to be a max player in the summer of 2024 in free agency, I’m told. I think he could certainly grow into that. He’s a rising star and a potential All-Star-caliber player, whether it’s this year or in the years to come. I think they’ve got to figure out if he’s a point guard. The results with him having the ball in his hands have worked pretty well so far. I certainly think they believe he has a chance to be an All-Star. Some think he could maybe be an All-NBA player one day. I think the days of him being an off-the-ball guy like he was with Harden are done. -via HoopsHype / November 2, 2023
Michael Scotto on why the Harden trade happened now: Daryl Morey, I heard, was on very little sleep over the past few nights working the phones on the James Harden deal. I know Tyrese Maxey has played well, but it seemed like it was at a point where this was the best deal the Sixers were going to get because the Clippers were the only team seriously interested. New York called a while back, but that was just due diligence, but nothing was ever serious there. I’m told Miami never had interest in Harden. -via HoopsHype / November 2, 2023
