It seems to be a fairly open secret that the NBA will expand in coming years. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has touched on the topic several times in recent years, but has always labeled expansion as something for the future.
Now, Silver has put a very loose timeline to the idea of expansion. The Commissioner said it’s something league will look at more closely after they negotiate the next TV rights deal. The NBA’s current media contracts expire following the 2024-25 season. Negotiations are expected to be complete well in advance of the rights expiring.
Silver said a dilution of talent is something that will be considered in expansion discussions, but that the NBA is doing well overall. Silver also noted that there is no shortage of strong cities for expansions teams. Seattle and Las Vegas are considered to be the most likely cities to get expansion teams.
