Michigan basketball transfer Chaundee Brown granted eligibility for 2020-21 season

The good news continues for Michigan basketball.

The Wolverines announced Friday night that transfer Chaundee Brown has been granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA and Big Ten and will be able to play during the 2020-21 season.

Brown, who transferred from Wake Forest, had been waiting for a ruling on his waiver and recently tweeted a plea to be deemed immediately eligible.

“First and foremost, whew!” Brown said in a news release from the program. “I am so thankful and truly blessed for the NCAA, the Big Ten, Michigan and coach (Juwan) Howard for giving me this opportunity. I also want to thank Wake Forest, Coach (Danny) Manning and all the administrators and fans in Winston-Salem (N.C.) for giving me three unforgettable years. While it took some time, and while I was prepared for any outcome, you cannot believe the smile and how grateful I am.

“Since my arrival in Ann Arbor, I have been welcomed with open arms. I was ready to do whatever I could to help us succeed either on or off the court. All I know is I cannot wait to put that maize and blue jersey on and play with this group of guys.”

SCHEDULE: ACC/Big Ten Challenge opponents announced for Michigan, MSU basketball

ANALYSIS: Caleb Houstan should make immediate impact for Michigan basketball next season

The news comes less than a month after coach Juwan Howard said the program was in the process of submitting a waiver for Brown.

Brown enrolled at Michigan in June and has been praised for his leadership and on-court talent. Now that he is eligible, Brown will likely be a key contributor. He averaged 12.1 points and 6.5 rebounds in 2019-20 while struggling with injuries at Wake Forest, and in 2018-19, he averaged 11.9 points and 4.9 rebounds in 31 games.

“We are indebted to everyone involved in this process,” Howard said in a statement Friday. “From Warde (Manuel) to Elizabeth (Heinrich) and to everyone at Wake Forest, we are appreciative. We are certainly in unprecedented times; however, having a player with Chaundee’s experiences, skill set and leadership only adds to our versatility and depth this season.”
