Deandre Ayton is one of the best free agents available this summer, despite his restrict free agent status. Yet, Ayton’s future with the Phoenix Suns remains in doubt.
Suns general manager James Jones said that Ayton remains a part of his team’s plans.
“Deandre had an amazing season and he’s progressed every year and improved every year,” Jones said. “He’s been here and so he’s a big part of what we do. His future with us is something we will address at the proper time which is in the future. He’s a free agent and I’ve said all along: he’s about the same things were about, which is winning. We’ll address it at the proper time.”
Ayton and Phoenix could not reach agreement on a contract extension last offseason. Ayton reportedly wanted a five-year, max deal, while the Suns countered by offering only four years. Now, Ayton could be a target for teams hoping to sign him via an offer sheet in restricted free agency.
