Frustrated Klay throws iconic headband into stands vs. Spurs originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
Have we seen the end of #HeadbandKlay?
Boy, we hope not.
Warriors guard Klay Thompson debuted the headband on Oct. 29, 2018, out of necessity after cutting his forehead, but he made it iconic that night when he set the NBA single-game record by nailing 14 3-pointers. Thompson didn’t play last season, but he wore it to the Warriors’ 2020-21 team photo. He rocked the look on “Klay Day” in January, the game that marked his triumphant return from two devastating injuries, and has been wearing it every game since.
However, in the third quarter of the Warriors’ 110-108 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday night, Thompson had enough of the headband.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr called a timeout after Spurs rookie Joshua Primo hit a layup to increase San Antonio’s lead to 70-64. Walking back to the bench, a frustrated Thompson grabbed his iconic headband and chucked it into the seats at Chase Center.
Thompson, who entered the timeout with 12 points, played the rest of the game without the headband. He heated up from beyond the arc without it. Thompson knocked down two 3-pointers before the third quarter ended and drained another pair of triples in the fourth quarter.
Thompson finished the game with 24 points on 9-of-22 shooting (6 of 12 from 3-point range) and no headband. His six 3-pointers are his third-most of the 2021-22 season, following eight against the Milwaukee Bucks on March 12 and seven versus the Sacramento Kings on Feb. 3.
Back on that record-breaking night in Chicago in 2018, Thompson gave credit to his favorite movie character who also wears a headband — Jackie Moon from the basketball comedy “Semi-Pro.”

Thompson had the opportunity to “meet” Moon, played by actor Will Ferrell, before a matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers on March 8. Ferrell produced a couple of hilarious moments and even nailed a half-court shot while warming up with Thompson and the Warriors that night.

But on Sunday, Thompson wasn’t feeling the headband.
Hopefully, Moon wasn’t watching. And Dub Nation certainly is wishing for the headband to return Tuesday when the Warriors visit the Orlando Magic.
