The most interesting game of round 27 was a derby match between two teams from Holland. Thirteenth ranked Leeuwarden outleveled host Den Helder (8-18) 86-67. His fellow American import guard Devin Whitfield (196-1998, college: LMU) helped adding 20 points and 6 assists. Leeuwarden’s coach used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was American-Nigerian guard Tobi Ewuosho (196-1997, college: Alabama St.) with 20 points and 5 rebounds. Leeuwarden (13-13) moved-up to eleventh place, which they share with Aalst and Leuven. Den Helder at the other side keeps the fifteenth position with 18 games lost. Leeuwarden is looking forward to face higher ranked Den Bosch (#6) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Den Helder will play against Zwolle (#14) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Defending Belgian champion maintains second place with 21-5 record having just one point less than leader Kortrijk. Aalst lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the eleventh position with 13 games lost. They share it with Leuven and Leeuwarden. Oostende will play against Union Mons (#9) in Jemappes in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Aalst will play at home against Charleroi and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Kortrijk’s coach felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. At the other side the best for losing team was Styrmir Thrastarson who recorded 15 points and 7 rebounds. Kortrijk (21-4) have an impressive series of nine victories in a row. They maintain first place. Loser Belfius Mons-Hainaut dropped to the ninth position with 12 games lost. Kortrijk will meet Antwerp (#8) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Union Mons will play against the league’s second-placed Oostende and hope to secure a win.

In the last two games of round 27 Leuven destroyed Limburg on the opponent’s court 86-61. Charleroi managed to outperform Antwerp in a home game 94-87.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 37 points (!!!) by Michael Flowers of Antwerp.

There was an upset when 4th placed Limburg United (17-8) was crushed at home by thirteenth ranked Leuven Bears (13-13) 86-61 on Friday. The best player for the winners was DR Congolese-Belgian Wen Boss Mukubu (198-1983, college: UAB) who had a double-double by scoring 17 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists. Point guard Steff Schauvlieger (185-2002) chipped in 13 points and 5 assists. Four Leuven Bears players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Jaren Holmes (193-1998, college: Iowa St., agency: One Motive Sports) who recorded 14 points and the other American import power forward Javion Ogunyemi (206-1995, college: Siena) added 15 points respectively. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Leuven moved-up to eleventh place, which they share with Aalst and Leeuwarden. Loser Limburg United keeps the fourth position with eight games lost. Leuven will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Limburg will play against Feyenoord (#17) and hope to secure a win.

We could consider it a predictable result in the game between close teams when eighth ranked Spirou Charleroi (15-11) defeated at home 7th ranked Antwerp Giants (14-11) 94-87 on Thursday. Charleroi outrebounded Antwerp 40-27 including a 20-4 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was American point guard Chris Lykes (169-1998, college: Arkansas) who scored 24 points and 4 assists. Bulgarian forward Yordan Minchev (202-1998) chipped in a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds. Four Spirou Charleroi players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Michael Flowers (185-1999, college: WSU) who recorded 37 points (!!!) and the other American import Mike Moore (203-1994, college: Mount Olive) added 14 points respectively. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Charleroi moved-up to seventh place. Loser Antwerp Giants dropped to the eighth position with 11 games lost. Charleroi will meet Aalst (#13) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Antwerp will play against the league’s leader Kortrijk (#1) where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.
