All-Star snub costs Domantas Sabonis $1.3 million bonus

The 3-time All-Star was not amongst the 14 reserves announced Thursday to take part in the All-Star Game to later this month at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. The list featured a record-shattering seven different players from one specific school but left out the Gonzaga alum. Sabonis, who signed a massive contract extension with the Kings in 2023, has a $1.3 million incentive bonus riding on him making the All-Star game.

Sacramento snubbed: Kings duo of De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis left out of NBA All-Star Game
There are a lot of reasons for the Kings and their fans to be upset about this. Let’s discuss ⬇

Tony East @TonyREast
It’s the All-Star game, not the “Great player on a winning team” game. Don’t like record-based aguements at all.
That said, I’d have Sabonis in over KAT. – 7:16 PM
Matt George @MattGeorgeSAC
If Fox or Sabonis get offered an injury replacement spot, I hope this is the answer 🖕 – 7:16 PM
Sean Cunningham @SeanCunningham
Not that it matters but my West All-Star reserves would have been:
Anthony Edwards, Devin Booker, Stephen Curry, Kawhi Leonard, Anthony Davis, Domantas Sabonis and Brandon Ingram. – 7:12 PM
Jason Anderson @JandersonSacBee
The Sacramento Kings duo of De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis both missed the cut as All-Star selections after earning All-NBA honors a few months ago. One or both could still be selected as an injury replacement. – 7:11 PM
Brian Mahoney @briancmahoney
Thought the Kings would get an All-Star. Sabonis’ numbers certainly make him worthy. – 7:09 PM

Wow. No disrespect to KAT and the T-Wolves, but I didn’t have him getting in over Domantas Sabonis or De’Aaron Fox – 7:08 PM

Sabonis this season:
— 20/13/8
— 1st in double-doubles
— 2nd in triple-doubles
— 1st in rebounds
— 6th in assists
Not an All-Star. statmuse.com/nba/player/dom…7:08 PM

Wrote my own All-Star picks yesterday (link below), but my expectation is coaches will take Curry over Fox and possibly Sabonis over Murray in West; and that Jaylen Brown makes it in East over Barnes, and one of Bam/Allen is last player instead of White.

More on this storyline

“It’s clear to anyone who watches the NBA and Kings basketball that De’Aaron and Domantas should have been selected for this year’s All-Star game,” Kings coach Mike Brown told Andscape. “They are playing at an unbelievably elite level, Domantas establishing historic numbers with his double-doubles and De’Aaron setting a new career mark for 3-point field goals. Every year, there are deserving players left off the team but, to me, this is truly a glaring wrongdoing.” -via Andscape / February 1, 2024
