Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr on Thursday commended the Cleveland Cavaliers for selecting Evan Mobley with the third overall pick in the NBA draft.
Kerr and the Warriors continued their four-game road trip on Thursday in Cleveland against the Cavaliers. Of course, they did not see Mobley as the rookie will miss the next 2-4 weeks with an elbow sprain suffered on Monday in a loss to the Boston Celtics.
While the Warriors are certainly not upset they didn’t see Mobley, given his ability on both ends of the floor, Kerr has been impressed by what he brings to the table.
He is a really impressive young player on both ends. I mean, his defensive instincts, passing, mid-range shooting. He just seems to have a really good feel for the game. They definitely have a good, young guy and he is only going to get better as he fills out and gets stronger and more seasoned.
Mobley has emerged as perhaps the top rookie to this point of the season. He is averaging 14.6 points, eight rebounds, 1.6 blocked shots and one assist in 15 games. He is second in scoring and rebounding among first-year players, while he is first in blocks and double-doubles.
The 20-year-old is considered to be a franchise cornerstone with the Cavaliers and projects to have a bright future. Certainly, Kerr thinks so as the early display by Mobley has been very impressive.
