Speaking before Game 4 of the 2022 NBA Finals, Adrian Wojnarowski reported that both Zion Williamson and Ja Morant are expected to “quickly sign max extensions” when free agency opens in July. Williamson and Morant were the top two picks in the 2019 NBA Draft and are extension-eligible for the first time this summer.
New Orleans VP of basketball operations David Griffin recently said that it was an “easy decision” to offer Williamson a full max extension of five years and $186 million. Griffin did say that the Pelicans may look to add some protections to the deal. This is in case Williamson suffers any sort of re-injury during the life of the extension.
By virtue of making All-NBA in 2022, Morant may sign a designated player extension. He’s eligible for the same deal as Williamson, but Morant could add designated player language that elevates his total deal to $223 million, should he make All-NBA again or win MVP.
