NEW: Branden Carlson’s absence on Saturday in a loss at Mizzou was profound on both ends, but especially on defense as Utah went small, super-small, and to a 1-3-1 zone.

Personally, I’ve never been a huge fan of exotic zone defenses (1-3-1, 1-2-2, etc.).
In this case, good for Craig Smith going there tonight, because Utah playing Mizzou straight up was not happening at a good-enough clip, especially late.

Just to harp on this once more, Mizzou was 4-for-21 for 3 in that win over Utah.
One of them was the Jarron Coleman deep shot at the end, but another was Ronnie DeGray hitting one when Utah was up five and finding some separation with about 7:00 left.
