The Golden State Warriors are close to acquiring a WNBA team. The franchise will play its games at Chase Center and would use their former practice facility in Oakland as its headquarters.
Joe Lacob was integral in the establishment of the American Basketball League, which started play in the fall of 1996. Lacob was owner of the San Jose Lasers, led by Stanford star Jennifer Azzi and Sheri Sam.
“We have had productive conversations with the WNBA and look forward to the possibility of being a part of the league’s expansion plans,” said the Warriors in a statement. “However, it would be premature to assume any potential agreement has been finalized.”
