In an unexpected move just before the start of the season, Virtus Bologna, the Italian basketball powerhouse, has parted ways with head coach Sergio Scariolo. The Italian coach was at the helm of the team since 2021.
Scariolo, who guided Virtus Bologna to the EuroCup title in 2022, thereby securing a return to the EuroLeague for the 2022-23 season after a 14-year absence, found his tenure cut short.
Despite high hopes and strong expectations, Virtus concluded the EuroLeague season in the 14th position, failing to qualify for the playoffs.
The official statement released by Virtus Bologna reads: “Virtus Pallacanestro Bologna announces the dismissal of Coach Sergio Scariolo. The statements made by the coach to the press on September 13, 2023, following those issued during the end-of-season press conference on June 27, 2023, unfortunately undermine the serenity and enthusiasm of the Virtus environment and the group that is preparing to face the first official commitments of the new sports season with the goal of achieving significant results both nationally and internationally. The club also announces the removal from duty of the first assistant, Andrea Diana.”
