Former NBA guard Tony Allen heard his sentence on Tuesday for committing healthcare fraud after his career was over, via BasketNews.
Allen used fraudulent invoices to request reimbursement for services that he never actually received. Consequently, he managed to take $265,000 for chiropractic treatments and $155,000 for dental services that were never provided.
As part of a substantial lawsuit involving 24 defendants, Allen received a sentence that required him to perform additional community service over a span of three years while being monitored.
This allowed him to avoid going to prison. Importantly, Allen had already returned a significant portion of the money before legal charges were brought against him.
“You seem not quite to have found your footing after your basketball career [had] ended,” U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni said, via Pete Brush from Law360. “To your credit, you paid the fund, admittedly when the plan caught you, but before you knew there was a criminal investigation.”
