Grant Williams was only with the Maveicks for a matter of months before the team traded him as swiftly as they could.
Thursday’s trade deadline saw the forward sent to Charlotte in exchange for P.J. Washington.
The franchise sent Williams, Seth Curry and a 2027 protected first-round pick to the Hornets for Washington and a pair of second-round picks before the deadline.
It seems that the Celtics were willing to tolerate Williams, since he was there for four years, but his attitude didn’t seem to sit well with the Mavs.
A source told DallasBasketball.com that Williams “brought with him a vocal and colorful personality that ended up not fitting well into the locker room.”
ESPN’s Time McMahon reported on the Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective podcast that “The Grant Willams’ thing was a massive whiff.”
“The fact they gave up a 2030 swap for Grant Williams and then dumped him as soon as they possibly could, which they were determined to dump him. Not just about getting P.J. Washington, they wanted to be out of the Grant Williams’ business,” McMahon added. “He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.”
One of the other interesting things McMahon noted was that “He [Williams] switched from Lukas to Tatums by the way, his shoe selection.”
Another element of the trade was Williams underwhelming production at power forward, which had taken a dip since he was traded to Dallas from Boston during the offseason.
Both Williams’ shooting splits and rebounding numbers were lower compared to his stint with the C’s.
He was still shooting at 37.6 percent of his threes, but that was the only kind of meaningful way he was contributing to offense.
