Texas A&M vs Northwestern State: Aggies women roll in home win

The Texas A&M women’s basketball team rumbled past Northwestern State 75-54 Sunday at Reed Arena.

The Aggies are 3-2 on the season and have won three of their last four games. Northwestern State, a Louisiana-based university in the Southland Conference, fell to 2-3.

A&M forward Jada Malone led all scorers with 24 points on 10-for-13 shooting off the bench. Sahara Jones chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds, and Lauren Ware had a double-double: 11 points, 13 rebounds.

Vernell Atamah, a freshman from Mesquite, led Northwestern State with 14 points on 4-for-12 shooting from the field. Senior guard Mya Blake was the only other Lady Demon to score in double figures.

Last time out, the Aggies lost to a ranked West Virginia team on the road. But A&M was more efficient Sunday, making 28 of 50 2-point field-goal attempts to overcome a 1-for-9 performance from 3-point range. A heavy free-throw discrepancy (16 of 26 for A&M compared with 6 of 6 for NWSU) was a key factor.

Northwestern State shot just 20-for-60 from the field.

Next up for A&M is a home game Saturday against Villanova.
