“Sidney brings a wealth of coaching experience and familiarity to our staff,” said Bickerstaff. “He is a great teacher of the game and his ability to build lasting relationships across the board is integral to the growth of our overall culture here in Cleveland. Sidney also brings all of the character traits we value as a human being – loyalty, trust, and integrity. I look forward to working with him and building something special together with our young and talented roster.”
The 61-year-old has an extensive NBA resume dating back to 1983 when he was drafted 25th by the Chicago Bulls after leading the North Carolina State Wolfpack to the NCAA title over Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler of the University of Houston Cougars.
Lowe played for five NBA teams in five seasons, intermittently interrupted by time in the Continental Basketball League and World Basketball League over a seven-year period.
He started his coaching career as an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1991 and has worked as an assistant or head coach for six NBA teams and NC State.
This will be Lowe’s second stint with the Cavs.
He was an assistant under coach Mike Fratello for five years from 1994-1999.
In his five years as a head coach for Minnesota and the Vancouver/Memphis Grizzlies, Lowe compiled a 79-228 record or .257 winning percentage.
