Rutgers athletic director Pat Hobbs resigned unexpectedly Friday, effective immediately, a source confirmed to CBS Sports.
Rutgers deputy athletic director Ryan Pisarri is expected to serve as interim athletic director, according to multiple reports.
Hobbs had been Rutgers’ athletic director for more than nine years, helping navigate the school during its challenging Big Ten transition. NJ.com, which first reported the news, reported that Hobbs wrote in an email to the athletic department staff that he informed Rutgers president Jonathan Holloway of his intention to resign on Friday morning.
Before arriving at Rutgers in 2015, Hobbs worked a number of jobs at Seton Hall, his alma mater, including as athletic director and Seton Hall Law School dean. His background was in tax law before he got into college athletics.
He made a number of prominent hires at Rutgers that have shaped the school’s athletic department success, for better and worse. His first football head coach hire, Chris Ash, was a major failure with a 8-32 record over four seasons. But he did successfully bring back Greg Schiano for a second stint as the football program’s head coach and also hired Steve Pikiell, who appears to have the basketball program on the rise after signing the nation’s No. 2 and No. 3 overall recruits in the class of 2024, according to 247Sports rankings.
