Following a sparkling, yet alarming Friday night, the Houston Rockets might call it the end for Amen Thompson in this year’s Summer League.
As relayed by Kelly Iko and Shams Charania of The Athletic, it is “very likely” for Houston to shelf Thompson for the remainder of their Summer League activities after the No. 4 overall pick sustained a left ankle sprain on their tourney opener win against the Portland Trail Blazers.
The ex-Overtime Elite sensation exited the match in the final frame after landing awkwardly in a block attempt over Ibou Badji, and is set for an MRI this Saturday morning to eventually evaluate his left ankle. He ended the night with 16 points, four rebounds, five assists, three steals and four blocks in 28 minutes to help Houston in grabbing the nail-biting dub over the Blazers.
Scoot Henderson, the top-three pick and his counterpart at the side of the Blazers, also took a premature exit during the third quarter because of a shoulder injury. As reported then by Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report, the former Ignite star will also undergo an MRI to determine the severity of his injury, but there is an optimism that he didn’t dislocate his shoulder.
Still, Henderson finished strong for Portland on a losing effort, pouring 15 points, six assists, five rebounds and a steal in 21 minutes of exposure.
There’s still three more games lined up for Houston this 2023 Summer League as they will face the Detroit Pistons (July 9), Oklahoma City Thunder (July 11) and the Golden State Warriors (July 14), accordingly.
