Boston Celtics guard Derrick White will be sticking around for a while. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, White and the Celtics agreed to a four-year, $125.9 million contract extension.
The new deal includes a player option for the final season, and is worth the maximum possible amount, Woj added. The 29-year-old could’ve waited a year and tested free agency to try and land a bigger payday, but elected to take care of things now and stay with the Cs.
White was a key piece of the Celtics’ run to Banner 18. He was named to the NBA’s All-Defensive second team and played so well that fans were clamoring for him to be named an All-Star.
The Colorado native averaged 15.2 points, 5.2 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 46.1% from the field and 39.6% from beyond the arc, across 73 regular-season appearances for the Cs.
For quite some time now, it felt like this extension was inevitable. First, at NBA Finals Media Day, White discussed how much he enjoys being a part of the city and the reception that he’s gotten from the fanbase.
“I love being here in Boston,” White told reporters. “I love the fans and I love the crowd. Just being part of this city — I try and embrace it as much as I can. I’m always thankful and grateful to be a part of this organization and play in front of this crowd.”
“I love being here in Boston… I try to be a good guy.”

Then, after Boston won the Finals, reports began to trickle out that keeping The Buffalo in town was amongst the team’s top priorities this summer.
Just last week, Brad Stevens told the media that he and the front office would love to keep White and the rest of the “extension-eligible” guys around for years to come.
“As far as trying to extend our guys… we’d love to have these guys that are extension eligible around here for as long as we can, right? They’ve been awesome, obviously.”
For now, Stevens has gotten his wish. Working on an extension for Jayson Tatum should be the next major move we see from the Celtics.
