Though it remains yet to be seen the plans for an expansion, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made it known that Mexico City has a chance to enjoy a potential franchise in the future.
As he spoke prior to the Miami Heat-San Antonio Spurs match on the league’s Mexico City game this season, Silver announced that the city will be considered should there be plotting that will occur soon for league expansion.
“It’s definitely possible,” Silver said Saturday (h/t Bleacher Report). “… I don’t have a specific timeline right now in terms of expansion, but there’s no doubt we will be looking seriously at Mexico City over time.”
Murmurs of Mexico City being included for a possible expansion suddenly sparked when NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum said to Andscape’s Marc J. Spears that there could be a chance given its world-class facility of Arena CDMX, the existence of G League team Mexico Capitanes and the short travel amongst Arizona, Texas, and Florida teams.
More than Mexico City, Las Vegas and Seattle remains the hot topic of conversation should the league ultimately heads to expand for basketball influence and an improved market.
Rumors suggest that the NBA could fulfill its expansion plans following the 2024-25 season, wherein a new national television deal is set to be hammered.
