LeBron James has left the Los Angeles Lakers with some worry after suffering an ankle injury during the second quarter of a 116-108 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday.
The four-time champion was able to finish the game but told reporters he isn’t sure how he was able to remain on the court.
“I have no idea how I finished the game,” he said. “It’s horrible. It’s horrible right now. … It’s pretty sore right now.”
James, who scored 39 points in 42 minutes, sustained the injury while trying to gain position for an offensive rebound. He appeared to roll his left ankle and immediately fell to the floor, clutching it in pain. The Lakers called a timeout and the player went to the bench so trainers could observe the joint.
He returned to the game shortly afterward but his efforts were not enough to secure a victory for Los Angeles.
