Kings clinch postseason berth if Timberwolves lose

Kings clinching playoff berth depends on Warriors-Timberwolves originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

The Kings had a chance to clinch an NBA playoff berth Saturday against the Utah Jazz, and they did everything in their power to make that happen.

But despite their 121-113 win at Golden 1 Center, they’ll have to wait a little bit longer to celebrate after the Phoenix Suns defeated the Philadelphia 76ers and spoiled the Kings’ clinch scenario.

On Sunday, however, Sacramento has another opportunity to officially end its postseason drought without even taking the court — and it all rides on their Northern California neighbors and coach Mike Brown’s old team, the Golden State Warriors, who play the Minnesota Timberwolves at Chase Center.

Two of three things went the Kings’ way in Saturday’s clinch scenario, which required a Sacramento win and losses by the Suns and Los Angeles Clippers. Sunday’s odds seem to better favor the Kings, with just one domino needed to fall into place.

And even if the Timberwolves beat the Warriors, the Kings still control their own fate. They officially can end their 16-season playoff drought with a win over Minnesota on Monday at Golden 1 Center, and if they do, the 916 is sure to be rocking.

But for now, all eyes in Sacramento will be on the Warriors-Timberwolves clash in San Francisco, set to begin Sunday at 5:30 p.m. PT.
