Derrick White has been in fine form this season and his efforts haven’t gone unnoticed by his teammate Jaylen Brown, who believes White is the most underrated player in the NBA.
“Who’s the most underrated player in the league? I think Derrick White,” Brown said during All-Star weekend. “Derrick White has been excelling his game at a rapid pace, so it’s been kind of hard for fans to keep up with. But Derrick White can ball, man. You let him get hot, he can go for 30 any night, can score the ball, (he) guards, plays both sides.”
Some fans, as well as Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla, argued that his guard should have got a spot in the All-Star game.
But’s hard to see him replacing the likes of Bam Adebayo, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jayson Tatum, Damian Lillard…the list goes on
Even after the Eastern Conference lost Joel Embiid and Julius Randle to injury, White still wasn’t selected to be in the team over Trae Young and Scottie Barnes.
After the C’s blowout win against the Nets earlier in the week, White was asked about not getting picked and he didn’t seem too pressed about it.
“Just being in the conversation and hearing all that was good enough for me,” White said. “I knew it was probably going to be a longshot but to be in the conversation was cool.”
“Obviously it would have been cool to play in the game,” White added. “But I’m going to enjoy this time off, spend some time with my family, and try to get ready for the second half. I’m not too bummed out about it, but it was definitely cool to hear.”
To his credit, 29-year-old has cemented himself a spot in Boston’s starting lineup, since he’s averaging 15.2 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.9 rebounds, while also putting up 46.2/39.7/89.1 shooting splits.
