Iowa basketball grabs former four-star forward from transfer portal

After Tuesday’s thrilling come-from-behind 97-87 overtime win vs. Nebraska, Iowa basketball received more good news.

Former four-star freshman forward Isaiah Johnson-Arigu has committed to the Hawkeyes from the transfer portal after part of one season with the Miami Hurricanes.

Johnson-Arigu entered the transfer portal on Jan. 6, 2025, following Miami head coach Jim Larranaga’s Dec. 26 retirement, which opened a 30-day transfer portal window for all Hurricanes’ players.

At 6-foot-7, 220 pounds, the native of Minneapolis, Minn, appeared in eight games for the Hurricanes this season and averaged just 5.4 minutes per game, scoring just 1.0 points per outing on 40% shooting from the field. The freshman averaged 0.8 rebounds, 0.3 assists, and 0.3 steals per game as well.

Coming out of Totino-Grace High School, Johnson-Arigu was looked at as a combo forward with the keen ability to drive to the basket, presence on the offensive glass, and comfortability to knock down mid-range jumpers.

Defensively, his lateral quickness is one of his biggest strengths, as it allows him to stay in front of the ball and become a versatile defender.

Due to the NCAA transfer portal rules surrounding players departing programs following a mid-season coaching change, Johnson-Arigu will be forced to sit out the remainder of the 2024-25 season and will have three years of eligibility remaining next fall.

While unable to play in games, Johnson-Arigu will be allowed to participate in Iowa’s practices and other team activities.

Even though it is unclear as of now how head coach Fran McCaffery will utilize Johnson-Arigu next fall, the addition of the talented forward is a much-appreciated recruiting jolt for the program moving forward.
