The San Antonio Spurs will be shutting down Victor Wembanyama for the remainder of the 2023 NBA Summer League, multiple sources relayed.
Gregg Popovich and San Antonio have already expressed their plans to limit Wembanyama on his active offseason exposure around the league moments after he was picked by the franchise as the top overall pick of this year’s draft last month.
Wembanyama logged two games of play for the Spurs this Summer League tourney. After a rusty debut against No. 2 pick Brandon Miller and the Charlotte Hornets, the French star bounced back with a 27-point, 12-board performance against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday.
Right after the match, Wembanyama revealed that he is planning to take a personal break for the rest of the offseason and stay away from media after months of highly publicized coverage as the league’s newest sensation. He will also miss France’s World Cup campaign in the Philippines in late August to early September.
The Spurs have three more games to play on their Summer League schedule. The Washington Wizards are up next on Tuesday.
