Gianmarco Pozzecco, the current head coach who is well-versed in Italian basketball history, views his team’s advancement to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Quarter-Finals as the most significant accomplishment in the nation’s basketball history.
Italy secured their place in the top eight of the World Cup for the first time in 25 years by defeating Puerto Rico 73-57 in the concluding game of the Second Round.
“Not even my mom believed we could do this,” Pozzecco admitted after his team secured Italy’s first Quarter-Finals appearance since 1998. “From the first day I told my players to start to dream. Then we can achieve the best. And they did it.”
