After winning his first championship, Gary Payton II now intends to squeeze up his value and go for a cash out.
The defensive-minded guard will sign with the Portland Trail Blazers on a reported three-year, $28 million contract (per Shams Charania of The Athletic). The Blazers were recently rumored as a big threat for the Golden State Warriors in retaining Payton II.
As a basketball journeyman, Payton II had a breakout season for the Dubs last season. Mainly known as a defensive enforcer, he also developed himself as a good offensive player under Steve Kerr’s system, averaging 7.1 points and 3.5 boards in 61 field goal shooting per 17.6 minutes.
A fan favorite amongst m Bay Area supporters, he helped Golden State to clinch its fourth title for the last seven seasons.
He will join a Portland club that holds a high aspiration for the upcoming season, fresh from the acquisition of Jerami Grant and retaining of Anfernee Simons.
