A medical biller, Matthew James, has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for a massive insurance fraud scheme.
He posed as an NBA player and other patients to pressure insurance companies for unwarranted payments, defrauding them of hundreds of millions of dollars.
The scheme involved manipulating insurance reimbursement rates and billing for procedures different from those performed.
James impersonated NBA point guard Marcus Smart and NFL lawyer/executive Jeff Pash, damaging their reputations in the process.
U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert called his actions “inexcusable.”
