FIBA releases mechanics, seeding of teams for 2023 WC Draw

FIBA announced Friday the seedings of 32 participating countries heading to this year’s World Cup Draw on Apr. 29.

Based on the latest FIBA World Rankings, the 32 teams were arranged accordingly on eight pots, each containing four nations. Philippines, being the contest’s group and final phase host, is placed atop the Pot 1, joining top-three powerhouses in Spain, United States, and Australia.

There will be eight different groups for the group phase. Teams that will be chosen for Groups A and B will play within the Smart Araneta Coliseum, while those who will fall on Groups C and D will perform in front of the Mall of Asia Arena crowd. Both stadiums can be found in the Philippines’ national capital in Manila.

As such, Japan’s Okinawa Arena will host Groups E and F, with Groups G and H going to Indonesia Arena in Jakarta.

To emphasize the balance of quality of teams for each venue as well as to facilitate the geographical distribution, Pots 1, 3, 5 and 7 will be shuffled around Groups A, C, E and G. The same will go through also for Pots 2, 4, 6, and 8 as they will get jumbled on Groups B, D, F and H.

Being picked by the Philippines to play in their home soil, the U.S. will banner the Group C of the competition. The Slovenian squad, meanwhile, heads to Group F as they were selected by co-host in Japan. And lastly, Indonesia will be dazzled by the Canadians who are set to fill Group H.
