FC Barcelona survived a late thriller against Olympiacos in the game that concluded the third round of the EuroLeague.
The Catalans needed two free throws from Pierre Oriola to defeat the “Reds” in overtime (79-78). Kostas Sloukas missed the game-winning two-pointer at the buzzer and Olympiacos lost its first EuroLeague game.
Prior to that moment, the Greek giants were in control in the first half, but FC Barcelona took over later. The “Blaugrana” led by nine (47-38), but saw Olympiacos come back again.
Since then, it was a hard-fought battle (61-61, 65-65) and the final seconds, both in regulation and overtime, determine the winner. FC Barcelona remained undefeated in the EuroLeague (3-0), along with ASVEL Villeurbanne and Anadolu Efes. On the other hand, Olympiacos dropped to 2-1.
In Madrid, Monaco attempted one of the wildest comebacks in EuroLeague history, but eventually lost to Real at Wizink Center (94-86).
The “Whites” led by 25 in the first half (44-19), but the visitors never gave up. With an incredible performance on both ends, they went on a 37-64 run and took the lead (81-83).
Yet, Real Madrid closed the game on a 13-3 run of their own and sealed the deal. Both teams now have identical records (2-1).
Crvena Zvezda remained close to the top of the table after its 73-61 home win over Zalgiris Kaunas. The Serbians played very well in the second half and that was enough to give them the victory. Zvezda outscored the Lithuanians 44-34 and sealed the deal.
The hosts improved to 2-1 in the standings. On the other hand, Zalgiris is still winless and at the bottom of the table (0-3).
EuroLeague Round 4 will take place on Thursday and Friday.
