Duke basketball recruiting: Five-star PG Tyrese Proctor commits to Blue Devils as they load up on 2023 stars

Duke has all but officially locked up the No. 1 recruiting class in the 2022 cycle as Jon Scheyer takes the reins of the program from Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski, and it may very well be heading in that same direction in the 2023 class after landing blue-chip guard recruit Tyrese Proctor — the third five-star commit in the cycle — in a huge recruiting win on Thursday.

Proctor, the No. 17 overall prospect in the Composite rankings and a top-five player at his position, chose Duke over a small-but-prominent list of suitors that included Arizona and the G League. The commitment solidifies Duke’s standing as the clear No. 1 class in 2023 with all four current commits rated inside the top-30 nationally.

Proctor was largely off the national radar in part because he’s an international product who hails from the NBA Global Academy, but don’t let that sway you into thinking the Australian guard won’t be an immediately impactful presence in 2023. At 6-foot-4, 170 pounds, he’s got a long frame and a big game capable of allowing him to produce as a scorer and distributor with real NBA potential to boot.

Scheyer has done an incredible job already as Duke’s coach-in-waiting with Proctor becoming the 10th recruit to commit to the program in just under 10 months. It’s impossible to replace a coaching legend like Coach K, but his high-level recruiting has given him a real shot to succeed Krzyzewski with little drop-off in success. It’s very likely that after failing to land a top-two recruiting class in the final three years of the Coach K era, Scheyer will start his tenure with consecutive No. 1 classes, an incredible foundation to building out what should be a successful, sustainable program moving forward in Durham.
