When Chauncey Billups was appointed as the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers this past offseason, he arrived to a team that was hoping to make a deep playoff run.
But as the season progressed the plan has changed. Portland lost Damian Lillard due to an injury, then they traded co-star CJ McCollum along with other players change the outlook of the team.
It was rumored that the Trail Blazers entered a rebuild phase. According to Billups, his team is going through a different stage. He calls is retool.
“This is not a rebuild at all,” Billups said, per via Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo! Sports. “Retool. We’ll take a few small steps back, develop some young guys, then boom, free agency and the draft.”
Portland is currently 12th in the Western Conference with 27 wins and 44 losses. The team is 2.5 games back from 10th place which would put them in the play-in zone.
