South Sudan claimed a crucial win over Angola in the Classification Round of the 2023 World Cup. They stormed past their African rivals to inch closer to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Carlik Jones (185-PG-1997, college: Louisville) stepped up with 26 points, 15 assists and 7 rebounds for the winners.
South Sudan set the tone early on as they unleashed 30 points in the first period taking a 14-point lead. The teams traded baskets throughout high-scoring second period as South Sudan secured a 14-point margin at the interval 53-39. South Sudan extended the lead in the third term. They entered the fourth period up by 16 points 73-56. South Sudan unloaded 28 points in the fourth quarter and rallied to a comfortable win at the end. Marial Shayok (196-SF-1995, college: Iowa St.) tossed in 18 points, while Nuni Omot (206-SF-1994, college: Baylor) added 17 points for South Sudan. Childe Dundao (172-PG-1998) responded with 21 points, while Silvio de Sousa (206-F-1998, college: Chattanooga) had 12 points for Angola.
