The most exciting game of round 8 in the SBL took place in Vevey. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of second-ranked Fribourg (6-3) to third ranked Vevey Riviera (6-2) 70-69 in the game for the second place. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Fribourg. It was a key game for the second position in the league. Vevey Riviera looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The former international power forward Jonathan Dubas (204-1991) saved the victory with a double-double by scoring 22 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. American point guard Malik Johnson (178-1997, college: Canisius) contributed with 11 points and 11 assists for the winners. Serbian center Uros Nikolic (204-1987) replied with 18 points and 5 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) for Fribourg. Fribourg’s coach Petar Aleksic rotated ten players in this game, but that didn’t help. Vevey Riviera have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place. Defending champion Fribourg dropped to the third position with three games lost. Vevey Riviera are looking forward to face Boncourt (#9) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Fribourg will have a break next round.
Important game to mention about took place in Basel. Sixth ranked Starwings (5-5) saved a 3-point victory at home edging 8th ranked Neuchatel (3-5) 65-62 on Saturday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Neuchatel. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Shawn Williams (185-1998, college: UAPB) who helped to win the game recording 22 points (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) and Vid Milenkovic who added 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists during the contest. Grenadian center Arkim Robertson (208-1994, college: CS Fullerton) responded with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 16 rebounds. Neuchatel’s coach Mitar Trivunovic tested ten players, but that didn’t help to avoid defeat in this game. Starwings moved-up to fifth place. Neuchatel at the other side keeps the eighth position with five games lost. They share it with Boncourt. Starwings will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Neuchatel will play on the road against Swiss Central (#11) in Luzern and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Even 19 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists by Jay Jay Chandler III did not help to save the game for Monthey. Neuchatel have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain eighth position with 3-5 record, which they share with Boncourt. Monthey lost fifth consecutive game. They dropped to the sixth place with five games lost. Neuchatel will meet bottom-ranked Swiss Central (#11) in the next round. Monthey will have a break next round.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 8: Starwings was smashed by Massagno on the road 93-57. Nyon won against Boncourt on its own court 75-63. Geneve managed to outperform Swiss Central in a road game 95-85. Geneve managed to beat Nyon at home 77-71.
The most impressive performance of 8th round was 22 points and 16 rebounds by DeVante Brooks of Nyon.

Neuchatel – Monthey 99-85

An interesting game was also surprising road defeat of 4th ranked Monthey (#4) in a game versus Neuchatel (#8) 99-85. Neuchatel looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The winners were led by American forward Dalan Ancrum (198-1996, college: W.Illinois) who scored that evening 27 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) and naturalized Argentinian swingman Juan De La Fuente (195-2000) supported him with 23 points. No shocking result in a game when first ranked Massagno (7-1) crushed at home 6th ranked Starwings (5-5) 93-57 on Wednesday. Massagno dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Starwings’ 30. They outrebounded Starwings 41-23 including a 29-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. The winners were led by the former international Laurent Zoccoletti (203-1999) who scored that evening 17 points and 7 rebounds and the former international swingman Roberto Kovac (190-1990) supported him with 17 points. Coach Robbi Gubitosa‘s team controlled all game and the coach could let to play all 12 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Even 17 points by American guard Shawn Williams (185-1998, college: UAPB) did not help to save the game for Starwings. His fellow American import center Noah Dickerson (205-1997, college: Washington) added 8 points and 6 rebounds for the guests. Massagno maintains first position with 7-1 record. There was a minor upset when 7th ranked Boncourt (3-5) lost on the road to tenth ranked Nyon (2-6) 75-63 on Wednesday. Nyon looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The winners were led by American DeVante Brooks (198, college: S.Arkansas, agency: Players Group) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 19 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks and the former international point guard Jeremy Jaunin (170-1991) supported him with 11 points and 8 assists. Nyon’s coach Stefan Ivanovic let to play all 12 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Even 16 points and 9 rebounds by Nigerian power forward Martins Igbanu (203-1997, college: Tulsa) did not help to save the game for Boncourt. Naturalized French guard Marlon Kessler (190-1998) added 11 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures.
