Here is the weekly review of the top performing Hungarian players, who play currently abroad.
#1. This week’s number one is former international forward Mikael Hopkins (206-1993, college: Georgetown, currently plays in Italy). He could not help Reggio Emilia in their last game. Despite Hopkins’ very good performance his team lost 67-73 on the road to the much lower-ranked (#12) Napoli.
He had a double-double by scoring 18 points and getting 12 rebounds. Hopkins also added 2 blocks in 29 minutes on the court; quite an impressive performance considering it’s only his first season in pro basketball. Hopkins has relatively good stats this year: 12.7ppg, 12.3rpg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 66.7%(12-18) and FT: 66.7% in three games he played so far.
He is a naturalized American.
Despite Hopkins played previously for the USA U18 national team, he played also for the Hungarian national team in 22.
Strangely Hopkins has never played in Hungary.
#2. Second place goes to former international power forward Jarrod Jones (207-1990, college: Ball St., currently plays in EuroCup). He was not able to help Joventut (1-1) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Jones’ good performance Joventut was defeated 81-72 on the opponent’s court by the second-ranked Bursaspor.
He scored 12 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. It was his first game for Joventut this season.
But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen.
Jones is a naturalized American.
He played for the Hungarian national team in 19.
Jones used to play for Albacomp-UPC Szekesfehervar in Hungarian league.
#3. The Hungarian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Gyorgy Goloman (211-1996, college: UCLA, currently plays in EuroCup). He was the major contributor in Lietkabelis‘ victory against the closely-ranked ratiopharm Ulm (1-1) 80-76 in the Eurocup on Wednesday night.
Goloman scored 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 23 minutes.
Panevezys Lietkabelis (1-1) is placed seventh in the Eurocup.
But the season just started, so everything may happen.
This year Goloman averages: 9.0ppg, 3.0rpg, 2FGP: 85.7% in two games.
He played for the Hungarian national team year ago.
#4. Small forward Marko Filipovity (204-1996, currently plays in FIBA Europe Cup) led his German team Chemnitz to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Ylli (0-2) crushing them 90-60 in the FIBA Europe Cup in Wednesday night’s game.
Filipovity scored 13 points in 21 minutes.
It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. NINERS Chemnitz (1-1) is placed second in the FIBA Europe Cup.
There are only four games left until the end of the FIBA Europe Cup Regular Season. So now every game will be critical.
This year Filipovity’s overall stats are: 9.5ppg and 3.5rpg in two games.

#5. Former international guard Benedek Varadi (194-1995, currently plays in Lithuania) was not able to secure a victory for Rytas (3-2) in their game against Jonava (5-0) in the Lithuanian LKL.
Varadi scored 7 points.
Rytas was defeated 78-71 at home by the leading Jonava.
But the season is still in its first stage and everything can happen.
Varadi’s total stats this season are: 9.0ppg and 2.3rpg.
He used to play for the Hungarian national team

#6. An experienced point guard Darrin Govens (185-1988, college: St.Joseph’s, currently plays in France) managed to help Limoges CSP Elite in a 2-point victory against the 16th-ranked SIG Strasbourg (1-4) 73-71 in the French Betclic ELITE ProA on Saturday night.
Govens scored only 4 points and added 3 assists in 23 minutes.
Limoges CSP Elite (5-0) is placed first in the Betclic ELITE ProA.
So far his team won all five games in the Regular Season.
But the season is still in its first stage and everything can happen.
This year Govens’ total stats are: 9.2ppg, 3.8rpg, 4.4apg and 1.2spg in five games.
He is a naturalized American.
Govens is a former international player as he played for the Hungarian senior team year ago.
He used to play for BC Kormend in Hungarian league.
#7. Former international point guard Obie Trotter (192-1984, college: AAMU, currently plays in Iceland) couldn’t help Hottur (0-2) in their game against Njardvik (2-0) in the Icelandic Subway League.
Trotter scored 5 points and had 5 steals.
Hottur was defeated 91-86 on their home court in Egilsstadir by the higher-ranked Njardvik (#4).
But the season is still in its first stage and everything can happen.
Trotter has averaged so far 6.5ppg, 2.0rpg, 3.5apg and 3.0spg.
He is a naturalized American.
Trotter used to play for the Hungarian national team
years ago.
He played also for Szolnoki Olajbanyasz in Hungarian league.
The list of other players, who all have Hungarian passport but never been selected to any of Hungarian national teams:
#1. Amit Suss (199-F/G-1999, currently plays in Israel). Suss could not help Gilboa Galil (1-1) to beat Hapoel Holon (2-0).
He scored 8 points.
Gilboa Galil was crushed 91-67 on the road by the leading Hapoel Holon.
Suss’ team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical.
Suss’ overall stats this season are: 5.5ppg and 3.5rpg.
He has a dual citizenship: Hungarian and Israeli.
Despite Suss’ Hungarian passport, he previously played for the Israeli U20 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Hungarian team.
#2. Experienced Laszlo Lazar (210-C-1987, agency: 011 Sports, currently plays in Romania) contributed to Timisoara‘s victory against the fourth-ranked Oradea (1-1) 77-73 in the Romanian Liga Nationala last Sunday.
Lazar scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 20 minutes.
CS SCM Timisoara (3-0) is placed first in Group B.
So far his team won all three games in the Regular Season.
But the season is still in its first stage and everything can happen.
This year Lazar’s overall stats are: 8.0ppg and 5.0rpg in three games he played so far.
He is another player who holds two passports: Hungarian and Romanian.
#3. Rolland Torok (203-PF-1990, currently plays in FIBA Europe Cup) was not able to help one of league’s weakest teams Voluntari (1-1) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Torok’s very good performance Voluntari was defeated 70-61 on the opponent’s court by the leading Craiova.
He was the top scorer with 17 points.
There are only four games left until the end of the FIBA Europe Cup Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial.
This season Torok has relatively solid stats: 14.5ppg and 2.5rpg.
He has both Hungarian and Romanian nationalities.
#4. Aleksa Brbaklic (195-F-1995, currently plays in Serbia) was not able to secure a victory for KK Joker Sombor (1-1) in their last game. Despite Brbaklic’s good performance the third-placed KK Joker Sombor (1-1) lost 86-95 in Kragujevac to the second-ranked Radnicki KG in the Group A.
He scored 10 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 22 minutes.
But the season is still in its first stage and everything can happen.
This year Brbaklic has relatively solid stats: 12.0ppg, 4.0rpg, 3.0apg and 4.5spg in two games.
He also holds two passports: Hungarian and Serbian.
