The biggest surprise of round 23 in Serie A2 was guest Fortitudo‘s (14-9) road victory over Verona (#8) 77-67 on Sunday evening. Fortitudo outrebounded Verona 38-22 including a 29-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Fortitudo especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 55.0 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The best player for the winners was American forward Deshawn Freeman (201-1994, college: Rutgers, agency: One Motive Sports) who had a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds. Swingman Riccardo Bolpin (197-1997) chipped in 14 points. Fortitudo BO’s coach Attilio Caja used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American guard Zach Copeland (193-1997, college: Illinois St.) produced 21 points for the hosts. Fortitudo have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Milano Urania and Rieti. Verona at the other side keeps the eighth position with ten games lost. They share it with Pesaro and Avellino. Fortitudo is looking forward to face higher ranked Cantu (#3) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Verona will play against Nardo (#19) and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
Very important is a home loss of second ranked Udine (17-6) against thirteenth ranked Brindisi (10-13) on Saturday night. Host Udine was defeated by Brindisi in Udine 90-79. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Udine. American forward Mark Ogden (206-1994, college: Utah Tech) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 25 points and 10 rebounds (perfect from the field making all eleven shots !!!). Tommaso Laquintana contributed with 10 points and 7 assists for the winners. American Xavier Johnson (201-1993, college: Colorado) answered with 14 points and 6 rebounds for Udine. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Brindisi moved-up to twelfth place, which they share with Torino. Udine at the other side keeps the second position with six games lost. Brindisi will play against league’s leader Rimini at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Udine will play against Vigevano and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Cantu (16-7) against fifth ranked Milano Urania (14-9) on Friday night. Visiting Cantu was defeated by Milano Urania in a tough game in Milano 57-63. It was a great evening for Alessandro Gentile who led his team to a victory scoring 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks. Dustin Hogue responded with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Milano Urania maintains fifth place with 14-9 record, which they share with Fortitudo and Rieti. Loser Cantu keeps the third position with seven games lost. Milano Urania will meet bottom-ranked Piacenza (#20) on the road in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Cantu will play against Fortitudo (#7) in Bologna and hope to secure a win.

Other games of round 23 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Cividale was crushed by Rieti in a road game 90-71. Rimini beat Piacenza at home 81-76. Cento won against Torino on the opponent’s court 88-71. Livorno Libertas managed to outperform Forli in a home game 80-73. Avellino recorded a loss to Vigevano on the road 79-69. Orzinuovi was defeated by Juvi Cremona on its own court 88-89. Nardo was beaten by Pesaro in a road game 84-70.

Rieti – Cividale 90-71

There was a minor upset when 4th placed Cividale (15-8) was crushed on the road by seventh ranked Rieti (14-9) 90-71 on Saturday. Rieti made 16-of-20 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. Rieti outrebounded Cividale 49-34 including a 38-26 advantage in defensive rebounds.
