The most exciting game of round 17 in the BBL took place in Braunschweig. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of 5th ranked Braunschweig (9-6) to second ranked ratiopharm Ulm (11-4) 99-98 on Sunday evening. Ulm had a 18-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. 26 personal fouls committed by Braunschweig helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American guard Justinian Jessup (201-1998, college: Boise St.) stepped up and scored 21 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and Israeli point guard Ben Saraf (197-2006) chipped in 11 points and 7 assists. Slovenian Luka Scuka (207-2002) responded with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. ratiopharm Ulm have a solid series of four victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader. American-Thailand guard Tra Holder (185-1995, college: Arizona St.) came up with 22 points and 5 assists (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) for Goettingen in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Weissenfels moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Bonn and Rostock. Goettingen lost sixth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with 13 games lost. Weissenfels will play against bottom-ranked Goettingen (#17) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. The best player for the winners was Michael Kessens who had a double-double by scoring 10 points and 14 rebounds. Alex Barcello produced 19 points for the guests. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. ALBA Berlin have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to twelfth place. Loser MLP Academics Heidelberg dropped to the fourth position with six games lost. They share it with 3 other teams. ALBA will meet Oldenburg (#13) on the road in the next round. Heidelberg will have a break next round.
There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 17: Hamburg lost to Chemnitz on the opponent’s court 60-69. Rostock managed to outperform Oldenburg in a home game 122-118. Frankfurt managed to beat Bonn on the road 77-70. Wuerzburg was defeated by Vechta on its own court 74-86.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 10 points and 11 rebounds by Hannes Steinbach of Wuerzburg.
Chemnitz – Hamburg 69-60
Very expected game when 13th ranked Hamburg Towers (6-9) were defeated on the road by seventh ranked Chemnitz (9-6) 69-60 on Friday. Chemnitz outrebounded Hamburg 43-32 including a 37-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was South Sudanese-Canadian Aher Uguak (201-1998, college: Loyola, IL) who scored 22 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. American Victor Bailey Jr (193-1998, college: GMU) chipped in 18 points.
