The most exciting game of round 20 in the BBL took place in Bonn. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 4th ranked ratiopharm Ulm (13-7) to seventh ranked Telekom Baskets (13-8) 98-97 on Saturday evening. Bonn made 24-of-31 free shots (77.4 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. 27 personal fouls committed by Ulm helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Canadian forward Thomas Kennedy (206-2000, college: Windsor) saved the victory by scoring 19 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. American guard Brian Fobbs (196-1998, college: Towson) contributed with 20 points (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) for the winners. Dominican forward LJ Figueroa (198-1998, college: Oregon) replied with 22 points and 8 rebounds for Ulm. ratiopharm Ulm’s coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn’t help. Telekom Baskets have a solid three-game winning streak. Bonn maintains seventh position with 13-8 record. Ulm lost third consecutive game. They keep the fourth place with seven games lost. They share the position with Ludwigsburg and Vechta. Bonn are looking forward to face Tuebingen (#16) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Ulm will play against Hamburg (#9) and is hoping to win this game.
Another interesting game for ALBA (12-5) which played on the court of higher ranked Vechta (13-7). Eighth ranked ALBA won 98-89. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Rasta Vechta. Worth to mention a great performance of Italian guard Matteo Spagnolo (193-2003) who helped to win the game recording 16 points and 4 assists and Johannes Thiemann who added 15 points during the contest. American guard Ryan Schwieger (198-1999, college: Loyola, IL) responded with 24 points. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. ALBA maintains eighth position with 12-5 record. Newly promoted Vechta keeps the fourth place with seven games lost. They share the position with Ludwigsburg and Ulm. ALBA will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Vechta will play on the road against Rostock (#14) and hopes to get back on the winning track.

The winners were led by DeAndre Lansdowne who scored that evening 21 points. Even 15 points and 6 assists by DeWayne Russell did not help to save the game for Oldenburg. EWE Baskets’ coach tested ten players seeing no chance for a win. Chemnitz have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 17-3 record. Oldenburg at the other side keeps the eleventh place with 11 games lost. Chemnitz will meet league’s second-placed Bayern in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Oldenburg will play against Crailsheim (#17) and hope to secure a win.
There were no big surprises in other games of round 20: Braunschweig beat Heidelberg on the road 94-76. Crailsheim lost to Ludwigsburg on its own court 89-100. Rostock unfortunately lost to Hamburg in a road game 89-105. Wuerzburg rolled over Bamberg at home 104-65. Tuebingen was crushed by Goettingen on the opponent’s court 101-70. Weissenfels were smashed by Bayern in a home game 86-116.
Heidelberg – Braunschweig 76-94
No shocking result in a game when eleventh ranked Braunschweig (10-11) beat on the road bottom-ranked MLP Academics Heidelberg (3-17) 94-76 on Friday. Braunschweig made 19-of-22 free shots (86.4 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The winners were led by American guard Ahmaad Rorie (186-1995, college: Montana, agency: Worldwide SM) who scored that evening 13 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists and forward Sananda Fru (209-2003) supported him with 16 points. Braunschweig’s coach Jesus Ramirez used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. Even 16 points and 6 assists by American point guard Joshua Gray (185-1993, college: LSU) did not help to save the game for Heidelberg.
