There were only 2 rounds played so far and it’s still very beginning of the Second Stage in FIBA Europe Cup. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Portuguese FC Porto at the home court on Tuesday night. Hosts were edged by Spanish Surne Bilbao 75-72. British-American power forward Sacha Killeya-Jones (212-1998, college: NC State) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds. American point guard Adam Smith (185-1992, college: Georgia Tech) contributed with 18 points for the winners. Surne Bilbao’s coach used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. Surinamese-Dutch guard Charlon Kloof (190-1990, college: St.Bonaventure) replied with 22 points and 5 assists for FC Porto. Surne Bilbao is looking forward to face Balkan in Botevgrad in the next round. FC Porto will play on the road against Goettingen and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Another interesting game for Turkish Bahcesehir which played in Lisbon against Portuguese Sporting. Bahcesehir had an easy win 82-67. American power forward Tyler Cavanaugh (206-1994, college: GWU) scored 19 points and 9 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Philip Scrubb chipped in 18 points and 6 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) during the contest. American guard Marcus LoVett Jr (183-1996, college: St.John’s) responded with 17 points and 5 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Bahcesehir will play against Jonava on the road in the next round. Sporting will play against Legia in Warszawa and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
An interesting game was also tough home defeat of Italian Varese in a game versus Dutch ZZ Leiden 82-79. Varese was very close to get their first win. But it seems they have to wait a little bit longer. Tajion Jones notched 30 points to lead the effort. Even a double-double of 23 points and 15 rebounds by Gabe Brown did not help to save the game for Openjobmetis Varese. ZZ Leiden will meet at home Chemnitz in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Varese will play against Oradea and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 2: winless Balkan was beaten by Goettingen on the road 76-70. Legia destroyed Jonava on its own court 111-72. Winless Manisa was outscored by Nymburk in a road game 84-62. Gravelines managed to beat Zaragoza at home 70-69. Chemnitz defeated Oradea on the opponent’s court 95-79.
The most impressive performance of 2nd round was 28 points by Donatas Tarolis of Oradea.



Goettingen – Balkan 76-70

BG Goettingen used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Botevgrad 76-70 on Wednesday night. Goettingen forced 19 Balkan turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Latvian center Karlis Silins (210-1997, college: FAU) notched 12 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the effort and American guard Umoja Gibson (185-1998, college: DePaul) supported him with 18 points. Four BG Goettingen players scored in double figures. BG Goettingen’s coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Even a double-double of 13 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists by forward Yordan Minchev (202-1998) did not help to save the game for Balkan. Danish-Ivorian center Jonas Zohore (210-1991, agency: BIG) added 13 points and 12 rebounds for the guests. BG Goettingen will meet at home FC Porto in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Balkan will play against Bilbao and hope to win that game.

Legia used a home court advantage and smashed the opponent from Jonava 111-72 on Wednesday night. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Legia will meet at home Sporting in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Jonava will play against Bahcesehir and hope to win that game.
