Anthony Edwards is certainly not one to hold back but his comments about Team USA’s head coach Steve Kerr have started rumors that the two have beef.
On Thursday, Edwards said that Kerr called him before the start of camp and was talking about Edwards coming off the bench for Team USA in the FIBA World Cup.
“I mean, of course I wasn’t cool with it,” Edwards told The Athletic. “If that’s what it takes, I mean, I am willing to do it, but nah, I’m never cool with that. [Coach Steve Kerr] said Dwyane Wade came off the bench when Kobe played. I was like, all right, we don’t have a Kobe, but all right. But it was cool.”
Obviously since then, Edwards has been the team’s best player in their exhibition games before the start of the FIBA tournament and Kerr has said he’s “unquestionably the guy”.
That hasn’t stopped the NBA world speculating that the Minnesota star and Kerr have a fractured relationship because of Edwards’ comments.
Since then, Ant has clarified that he didn’t directly make those comments to Kerr and it what just what he was thinking at the time.
“I was thinking that when he (Kerr) said I was coming off the bench ….Y’all doing too much, y’all going too far. That’s my dog, Steve Kerr locked in…we talk every day… Y’all some losers.” Edwards said in an Instagram Story.
Edwards has been a starter over Cam Johnson since their second scrimmage and averaged 19.2 points on 51 percent shooting from the field in USA’s five warm up games.
He has ben the talk of the town amongst his coaches and teammates, who believe he is going to another level right before their eyes.
“Anthony Edwards, that’s gonna be a household name,” USA assistant coach Erik Spoelstra said on Wednesday. “(Maybe) it already is.”
USA’s first game in the FIBA Basketball World Cup will be against New Zealand at 8:40am ET on Sunday and can be watched on ESPN2.
Other games will be available to watch in the US on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Plus (NB: subscription is required to view some games).
Or games can be streamed via FIBA’s Courtside 1891 Max (depending on your geographical location).
