The 2021-22 NBA regular season has started off very competitive.
Let’s take a look at the situations of some young players & veterans through the first 10 games.
- The emergence of Orlando Magic sophomore Cole Anthony has moved former starter Gary Harris to a bench role. Harris started in all of the Magic’s preseason games, but Anthony’s numbers so far (20.2 PPG/7.1 RPG/5.2 APG/1.1 SPG) have definitely proved he’s the right fit for the future. The just turned 27-year-old Harris is on an expiring contract (4 years, $84 million) that he signed back in 2017 with the Denver Nuggets.
- Atlanta Hawks veteran Lou Williams is only averaging 11.3 MPG this season and recently told Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks that this might be his last NBA season. Although, you have to think if Williams wasn’t traded in a pointless deal by the Los Angeles Clippers for current Laker Rajon Rondo, would Williams still feel the same way about possibly retiring? The deal was a head scratcher for a team who lacks bench scoring like the Clippers to trade their best bench scorer for a guy who would get DNP’s in the playoffs/not return.
- Playing time for former lottery picks Kevin Knox & Jarrett Culver still hasn’t been there for the youngsters. Knox was the #9 pick by the New York Knicks in 2018 and has seen less minutes each season since his rookie year. As for Culver, he was the #6 pick in 2019 by the Minnesota Timberwolves and just had his 2022-23 fourth year option declined by the Memphis Grizzlies.
- Detroit Pistons sophomore Saben Lee has only appeared in 4 games on 6.8 MPG, but that hasn’t hurt his confidence one bit. Lee went off for 42 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals in the Motor City Cruise’s G League opener on Saturday. The 22-year-old showed off impressive play in short minutes during his rookie year, picking up full court on defense and bringing solid point guard instincts on offense.
