The most interesting game of round 17 was a derby match between two teams from Georgia. First ranked Mega outleveled host Telavi (4-10) 110-66. The game without a history. Mega led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Telavi’s 38. Mega forced 22 Telavi turnovers and outrebounded them 45-19 including a 15-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 31 assists comparing to just 16 passes made by Telavi’s players. The best player for the winners was swingman Giorgi Kobakhidze (194-2002) who scored 24 points and 6 assists. American forward Demonte Flannigan (201-1995, college: CSU) chipped in 17 points and 11 rebounds. point guard Valeri Sumbadze (185-2004) produced 23 points and 5 rebounds for the hosts. Telavi’s coach gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Mega have a solid series of three victories in a row. Newly promoted Mega maintains first place with 13-1 record. Telavi lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with ten games lost. An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Vahakni. First ranked Georgian Mega faced second-ranked Armenian Vahakni City. Guests from Tbilisi (13-1) defeated host Vahakni City (11-3) 81-69. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Vahakni City. American forward Demonte Flannigan (201-1995, college: CSU) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds. Otari Buliava contributed with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. American guard Kenneth Miller (186-1995, college: OVU) answered with 24 points and 7 rebounds for Vahakni City. Vahakni City’s coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn’t help. Mega have a solid series of three victories in a row. Newly promoted Mega maintains first place with 13-1 record. Defending Armenian champion Vahakni City keeps the second position with three games lost. Mega will play against Telavi (#6) at home in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Vahakni City will play against Telavi (#6) and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Mega will meet at home Telavi (#6) in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Supersonics will have a break next round.

The guests trailed by 5 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 15-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 113-76. Mega dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Supersonics’ 32. They outrebounded Supersonics 64-21 including a 21-0 advantage in offensive rebounds. Mega looked well-organized offensively handing out 30 assists comparing to just 13 passes made by Supersonics’ players. American forward Demonte Flannigan (201-1995, college: CSU) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 19 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and power forward Davit Maisuradze (205-1990) chipped in 9 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. There was no surprise in Tbilisi where 5th ranked Armenian Dvin (6-9) was defeated by first ranked Georgian Mega (13-1) 87-77 on Friday. The game was mostly controlled by Mega. Dvin managed to win second period 24-23. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was dominated by American players. Point guard Tyrell Corbin (185-1992, college: CSUB) stepped up and scored 29 points and 7 assists for the winners and forward Demonte Flannigan (201-1995, college: CSU) chipped in 19 points and 18 rebounds. Guard Tanner Blyly (190, college: Kalamazoo) responded with 30 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists and guard Anthony Alston (183-1994, college: TAMIU) scored 12 points. Telavi – Mad Foxes 57-89
No shocking result in a game when third ranked Armenian Mad Foxes (11-4) smashed on the road 6th ranked Georgian Telavi (4-10) 89-57 on Tuesday. The game was mostly controlled by Mad Foxes. Telavi managed to win third quarter 23-12. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Mad Foxes forced 27 Telavi turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Tigran Mkrtumyan stepped up and scored 29 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) for the winners and American forward Jose Roman-Angueira (201-1994, college: Miles) chipped in 10 points and 10 rebounds. Worth to mention Roman-Angueira played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped get the job in pro basketball. Point guard Valeri Sumbadze (185-2004) responded with 21 points and 8 rebounds and center Ilia Sulakvelidze (196-2005) scored 9 points and 13 rebounds. Telavi’s coach already knew that his team would not have a big chance, so allowed to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Mad Foxes maintains third place with 11-4 record having just one point less than leader Mega. Telavi lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with ten games lost. Mad Foxes will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Telavi will play against the league’s second-placed Vahakni City (#2) and hope to secure a win.

But then Mega had a 19-15 second period charge getting the lead and Vahakni City was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 69-81. Mega forced 19 Vahakni City turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. American forward Demonte Flannigan (201-1995, college: CSU) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds. Swingman Otari Buliava (198-1994) contributed with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. American guard Kenneth Miller (186-1995, college: OVU) answered with 24 points and 7 rebounds and American-Armenian guard Tade Keshishyan (185-1994, college: Bristol) added 15 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Vahakni City. We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 6th ranked Georgian Telavi (4-10) was rolled over at home by seventh ranked Armenian Cilicia (4-12) 99-71 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Cilicia. Telavi managed to win second period 23-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Cilicia dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Telavi’s 28. Cilicia forced 25 Telavi turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 35 assists comparing to just 22 passes made by Telavi’s players. American guard Brandon Kohler (190-1994, college: Evergreen St.) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 6 rebounds and 14 assists for the winners and his fellow American import swingman Javonte Matthews (195-1995, college: St.Katherine) chipped in 21 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Kohler attended previously one of camps at Eurobasket Summer League on his way to pro basketball. Five Cilicia players scored in double figures. Point guard Valeri Sumbadze (185-2004) responded with 28 points and 5 rebounds and forward Davit Gigolashvili (188) produced a double-double by scoring 16 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games.
